| Thallasemia Barrier |
It is estimated that about one lakh Indians suffer from Thallasemia and over 8,000-10,000 thalassemics are born
every year in the country. According to a study, there are almost 30 million people in India who are Thallasemia
carriers. In the Capital alone, about 200 thalassemic children are born every year.
The cause for concern is the fact that of over 100,000 children born with Thallasemia in the world, about 10,000
cases are in India alone. And about 80-90 per cent of thalassemic infants in India die either undiagnosed or because
of lack of proper treatment.
Apart from causing an emotional and psychological upheaval, Thallesemia also poses a huge financial burden for the
family. The costs of chelation for removing excessive iron and for blood transfusions are close to Rs 10-15,000 per
month. Chelation injections cost Rs 2 lakh per year. Experts strongly feel going for HbA2 test before
marriage/conception followed by prenatal diagnosis (if required) can help in controlling the disease. Parents of
almost all thalassemic children don’t know about this genetic disorder proves that there’s ample need to have a
mass awareness campaign. To create awareness about Thallesemia and provide blood transfusion facilities to
thalassemics is the need of today’s time.
At HealthImpetus, we have teamed up well-known Healthcare Professionals and have been conducting
Thallasemia awareness camps across Pan-India.
